The Mental Game – Because golf isn’t just your swing… it’s the conditions you’re playing in.
I was reading (as usual… every night… like a completely normal person) another golf book when someone asked me:
“Have you read every golf book ever written?”
I laughed and said,
“Yeah… probably getting close.”
And honestly… they’re not wrong.
It’s somewhere between passion and a full-blown addiction at this point.
But here’s the thing –
I’m driven to understand every part of this game.
Even things like the size of the ball, the hole… how golf balls are made, and why there are so many of them…
Because I genuinely believe the more you understand it…
…the better you can play it.
(…which makes my current scores slightly more confusing, but we’ll ignore that for now.)
As I was building out my golf network on LinkedIn, I kept seeing people with certifications in agronomy.
And of course, my brain immediately went to:
“What is that… and more importantly… how does it help my game?”
Because let’s be honest –
everything comes back to:
“Will this help me play better golf?”
So What Is Agronomy?
Agronomy is the science behind growing and maintaining plants – especially turf – the right way.
Simple enough.
But here’s where it gets interesting…
Why It Matters in Golf
It’s actually everywhere:
• Golf course superintendents rely on it daily
• It controls:
o Green speed and smoothness
o Fairway conditions
o Turf health and durability
• Things like aeration, fertilization, and irrigation?
That’s all agronomy
Without it…
golf courses would be patchy, inconsistent, and honestly…
borderline unplayable.
So now the question becomes:
“Why does this matter to me?”
Good question.
Settle in. Let’s talk golf.
You ever walk off a round thinking:
“That just felt off.”
Same swing.
Same course.
Same clubs.
Completely different score.
And it sticks with you a little… because you know you’ve played better.
(And you’re replaying at least three shots in your head on the drive home.)
Here’s the part that took me a while to realize:
Sometimes… it’s not just your swing.
(Yeah… that one took a minute to sink in for me too.)
What Changed (That You Didn’t Notice)
You show up expecting the same course you played last time.
But it’s just… a little different.
• Greens a touch faster
• Fairways a little softer
• Rough a bit thicker
• Pins tucked a little tighter
Nothing dramatic.
Nothing obvious.
Just enough to change how everything plays.
The Invisible Opponent
There’s something in golf that doesn’t get talked about enough:
You’re not just playing the course.
You’re playing how the course is set up that day.
That’s agronomy.
(Yeah… fancy word. Simple idea.)
It’s how the course is maintained:
• Grass length
• Firmness
• Moisture
• Speed
And it changes more than you think.
Where It Shows Up
It’s subtle… until it’s not.
• That putt that gets away from you → Greens were faster
• That chip that keeps rolling → Turf was firmer
• That iron that releases more than expected → Fairways dried out
• That drive that settles down in the rough → Rough got thicker
Same swing.
Different result.
I had a round not too long ago where I blew three putts past the hole early.
Same stroke I always use.
Same read (at least I thought).
After the third one, it finally clicked:
“Oh… these greens are fast today.”
Nothing was wrong.
I just hadn’t adjusted yet.
(Would’ve been nice to figure that out before the third one… but here we are.)
That’s usually the moment where it starts to click.
“Okay… something’s different today.”
The Trap Most Golfers Fall Into
A lot of us look to our swing first.
So when things feel off, the instinct is:
“I need to fix something.”
But sometimes…
it’s less about fixing…
and more about adjusting to what’s in front of you.
A Simple Shift
Better players do this without even thinking.
They figure out the course early.
First few holes, they’re asking:
• How fast are these greens really?
• Are approach shots stopping or releasing?
• How is the ball sitting in the fairway?
Then they make small adjustments:
• Lag putts instead of being aggressive
• Land it shorter and let it release
• Take one less club… or one more
Nothing drastic.
Just small changes.
Why This Matters (More Than You Think)
This is one of those:
Small change → big impact moments.
Because when you understand this…
you start to see the round more clearly.
And you start making better decisions along the way.
Real Talk
You can play the same course…
with the same swing…
and get a completely different result.
Not because anything is “wrong.”
But because conditions change.
The Next Shot
Next time you tee it up, don’t just ask:
“Do I have my swing today?”
Ask:
“What is this course giving me today?”
Pay attention early.
Make small adjustments.
Trust what you’re seeing.
Because golf isn’t just about hitting better shots.
It’s about understanding the conditions you’re playing in.
Real Talk. Play Better.
Effort builds results.
