I Wanted to Be Scratch… So I Had to Learn the Scorecard
The Simple Guide I Wish I Had Sooner
Settle in. Let’s talk golf.
I am quietly competitive.
I like to win.
Contract Rummy.
Hearts.
Board games.
Doesn’t matter.
If I’m playing, I want a shot at winning.
Golf?
Same thing.
I don’t just want to “play.”
I want to improve.
I want to score well.
And eventually – yes – I want to be scratch. (birdies and eagles are coming)
That’s literally where the site name came from.
Someone once told me on the course:
“You should feel great being a bogey golfer.”
And I thought:
“No. I want to be scratch.”
But here’s the problem.
You can’t chase scratch…
If you don’t understand the scorecard.
The First Confusing Thing: HCP
The row that confused me most?
HCP. (handicap)
I had no idea what it meant.
Here’s the simplest explanation.
One-Line Margin Note:
HCP: Lower = Harder | Higher = Easier
Write that on your scorecard.
You’re welcome.
Understanding Handicap Numbers (HCP)
Each hole is ranked by difficulty.
• HCP 1 = hardest hole
• HCP 18 = easiest hole
• Lower number = harder hole
• Higher number = easier hole
Memory tip:
“1 is brutal. 18 is great.”
That’s it.
Why It Matters
Handicap strokes are applied starting at HCP 1.
Example:
If you get 6 strokes in a match:
You apply them on holes ranked 1–6.
If you get 18 strokes:
You get one on every hole.
Simple once someone explains it.
Very confusing before that.
Breaking Down the Scorecard
Let’s simplify everything else too.
HOLE
The number of the hole you’re playing (1–18).
Groundbreaking, I know.
YARDAGE (By Tee Color)
Shows the distance from each tee box.
Common tees:
⬛ Black → longest
⬜ White → standard
🟦 Blue → intermediate
🔴 Red → forward/shorter
Choose tees based on comfort.
Not ego.
Seriously.
PAR
Expected strokes for a skilled golfer.
• Par 3 → shorter hole
• Par 4 → medium length
• Par 5 → longer hole
Par is the benchmark.
Your score is the story.
YOUR SCORE
Count every stroke.
Every swing.
Yes, even that one.
FRONT / BACK / TOTAL
Front 9 → holes 1–9
Back 9 → holes 10–18
Total → full round score
Simple.
Common Scoring Terms
• Eagle → 2 under par
• Birdie → 1 under par
• Par → even
• Bogey → 1 over
• Double Bogey → 2 over
Beginner pro tip:
Doubles are normal.
Keep moving.
Quick Etiquette Notes
• Write scores after leaving the green
• Don’t obsess over math mid-hole
• Play ready golf
• Have fun – seriously
The Bigger Lesson
If you’re competitive like me…
You can’t improve what you don’t understand.
Learning the scorecard wasn’t glamorous.
But it made the game clearer.
And when the game gets clearer…
It gets more enjoyable.
And that’s when improvement actually sticks.
The Next Shot
Your next shot doesn’t have to be perfect – just intentional.
Understand the game. Then play it.
When did you first understand how handicap actually works?
Drop it in the Clubhouse – I promise someone else is confused too.
Real Talk. Play Better.
Effort builds results.
