The Day I Stopped Putting the Ball in the Middle of My Stance

The Setup Shift That Changed Everything

Settle in. Let’s talk golf.

Ball position.
Sounds simple.
Sounds boring.
Maybe even sounds lame.
It was a complete game changer for me.

The “Middle of the Stance” Mistake
When I first started learning golf, I watched a lot of videos.
And what did I see?
Ball in the middle.
Every time.
So what did I do?
Ball in the middle.
Every club.
Driver.
Hybrid.
Irons.
Middle.
And then I wondered why my driver felt like it was actively working against me.
High slices.
Low lobs.
Inconsistent contact.
Frustration built.
And yes…
It’s also when I “lost” my first golf club.
(Lost meaning: snapped in frustration.)
Thankfully it wasn’t one of my TaylorMade Qi clubs.
We’ll leave it there.

The Moment Everything Changed
Then I saw a lesson that stopped me in my tracks.
The instructor said something so simple:
“The ball position changes depending on the club and the shot.”
Wait… what?
No one had explained that clearly to me before.
Ball position isn’t static.
It’s strategic.

Distance vs Loft
Here’s what I learned.
If you want:
More distance → Ball moves forward.
More loft → Ball moves toward center.
That’s it.
But it changed everything.

What Works for Me
Here’s the simple structure that completely shifted my consistency:
Driver
Ball just inside my left heel.
This allows me to catch the ball slightly on the upswing.
More launch.
More carry.
Less frustration.
Also important:
The top of the driver should line up roughly with the center of the ball.
That was another subtle tweak that mattered.

Hybrids / Fairway Woods
About 2 inches forward of center.
Still forward enough for sweep contact.
But not as far forward as driver.

Irons
About 1 inch forward of center.
Encourages ball-first contact.
Then turf.
Compression improved dramatically once I understood this.

Wedges
Center of stance.
Control.
Loft.
Clean strike.
(Short-game variations are a different conversation. We’ll get there.)

Why This Matters
Ball position influences:
  •  Launch angle
  •  Angle of attack
  •  Contact quality
  •  Spin
  •  Trajectory

When my driver was in the middle of my stance?
I was effectively forcing it into a downward strike.
That’s not what a driver is built for.
No wonder it hated me.

The Bigger Lesson
I didn’t need a new swing.
I needed a better setup.
Small change.
Massive impact.
And once I understood this?
I stopped fighting my clubs.

One Important Reminder
When I walk up to the ball now…
I don’t rebuild mechanics.
I don’t panic-adjust.
I set my ball position intentionally.
Then I trust it.
Address is not the time to improvise.
It’s the time to commit.

The Next Shot
Your next shot doesn’t have to be perfect — just intentional.
Set it up correctly. Then swing.

Did you ever play with the ball in the wrong spot for years?
Which club gave you the most trouble?
Drop it in the Clubhouse – I know I’m not alone on this one.

Real Talk. Play Better.
Effort builds results.

Wedges – center of stance
golf stance with ball position
Irons – closer to the target (about 1 inch from center)

Hybrids / Fairways – 2 inches from center

Driver – just inside your left heel

Top of driver should be center of ball
