The Day I Realized I Wasn’t Built Like a PGA Pro

Posture, Comparison, and Finding What Actually Works

Settle in. Let’s talk golf.

One of the first things I noticed about myself on video?
My posture.
And not in a good way.
I’d watch PGA players on TV.
Then I’d watch myself.
And I’d think…
Is that really me?
If so, I’m in trouble.
At one point, I looked like a stand-in for the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Back rounded.
Flat-footed.
Awkward.
Stiff.
Not exactly “tour-ready.”

The Comparison Trap
I tried everything.
Straighten the back.
Bend the knees more.
Push the hips back.
Stand taller.
Look athletic.
I was trying to copy what I saw.
And it never felt natural.
Then I heard something in a lesson video that changed everything:
“Don’t try to look like them. They’ve been doing this since they were five years old.”
That hit me.
These guys grew up moving this way.
Their posture is trained.
Their mobility is built.
Their balance is ingrained.
I was trying to copy a finished product.
That’s exhausting. (and it was as well as frustrating and morale crushing)

A Little Perspective
I’ve always had a naturally arched back.
In middle school, they thought I had scoliosis.
So trying to look like someone with a perfectly neutral spine?
Probably unrealistic.
The moment I stopped trying to look like a pro…
Was the moment I felt relief.
Instead of copying them, I focused on:
Being as straight as I can be.
Pushing my hips back slightly.
Adding a small knee bend.
Staying relaxed.
Not perfect.
Just functional.

The Game Changer
Then came the biggest discovery.
I was flat-footed.
Completely flat-footed.
No wonder I felt stuck.
One instructor explained:
Your weight should be more on the balls of your feet.
Not toes.
Not heels.
Athletic.
When I shifted my weight forward slightly?
Wow.
I felt:
  • More agile
  • More balanced
  • More able to rotate
  • Less likely to stand up in my backswing

Suddenly I could turn without feeling locked.
I wasn’t swaying.
I wasn’t falling back.
I wasn’t standing up through impact.
Everything connected better.

Small Adjustments. Big Results.
Here’s what helped me most:
  •  Back as straight as naturally possible
  •  Hips pushed back slightly
  •  Soft knee bend
  •  Weight on the balls of my feet
  •  Relaxed upper body

Nothing dramatic.
No overcorrection.
Just small intentional tweaks.
And those tweaks:
  •  Helped me stay down on the ball
  •  Improved rotation
  •  Reduced early extension
  •  Improved consistency
  •  Allowed me to complete the swing all the way through

Small changes. Big impact.

One More Important Lesson
When I walk up to the ball now…
I forget everything else.
I don’t rebuild posture.
I don’t rehearse five adjustments.
I step in, set up, and trust it.
Address is not the time to improve.
It’s the time to commit.

Stop Comparing
You don’t need to look like a tour pro.
You need to be stable.
Balanced.
Athletic for you.
Golf isn’t a posture competition.
It’s a consistency game.

The Next Shot
Your next shot doesn’t have to be perfect – just intentional.
Stand tall. Stay balanced. Trust your swing.
