When Should You Upgrade Your Driver?
Settle in. Let’s talk golf.
The first thing I wanted to upgrade wasn’t my swing.
It was my driver.
Because obviously the reason I sliced 40 yards right was “technology.”
Let’s talk about when an upgrade actually makes sense.
Upgrade If:
Your Driver Is 8–10+ Years Old
Modern drivers:
• Launch higher
• Spin less
• Are more forgiving
• Offer adjustable weighting
Technology has legitimately improved.
You’ve Developed Consistent Swing Speed
If you now:
• Swing over 90–95 mph consistently
• Understand launch conditions
• Know your miss pattern
A properly fit driver can make a noticeable difference.
Your Current Driver Actively Hurts You
Signs:
• Extremely low ball flight
• Excessive spin
• Loud, hollow feel
• No adjustability
Then yes – upgrading helps.
Don’t Upgrade If:
• You just started
• You don’t know your carry distance
• You slice due to open clubface
• You haven’t taken a lesson
No driver fixes face control.
Fitting > Brand
Before chasing brands like:
• TaylorMade
• Callaway Golf
• PXG
Get a basic fitting.
Even a retail fitting at:
• Golf Galaxy
• PGA TOUR Superstore
Can dramatically improve results.
My Suggesrtioon
Upgrade when:
• Your mechanics are stable
• You’ve plateaued
• You know your numbers
Not when you’re frustrated after one bad round.
The Next Shot
Technology can help.
But it can’t swing for you.
Upgrade when your skill earns it.
Be honest – are you thinking about upgrading your driver… or your swing?
Drop a comment and tell me what’s really behind the urge to upgrade.
