Mental Game – When It Finally Starts to Click
Settle in. Let’s talk golf.
I’ve said before this isn’t really a place for personal posts.
But this one… it felt worth sharing.
Because there’s a moment in this game – if you stick with it long enough – where things start to shift.
Not perfectly. Not consistently.
But noticeably.
And when it happens… you feel it.
The Wake-Up Call
I watched a video of my swing the other day.
And I’ll be honest…
It was bad.
Like… really bad.
The kind of bad where, if I were my own instructor, I might’ve suggested a new hobby.
Maybe pickleball. Maybe something indoors where fewer people could witness it.
But here’s the thing –
Seeing it changed everything.
Because what I thought I was doing…
and what I was actually doing…
were not even close.
That video didn’t discourage me.
It made me aware.
And awareness is where improvement starts.
The Adjustment (But Not During the Swing)
From there, I started working on one thing:
Slowing down my backswing.
Not over-pulling my arms at the top.
Instead, focusing on turning fully… letting the wrists hinge…
and allowing a brief pause at the top.
That one change forced everything else to slow down.
And so far.. it’s been the single biggest improvement in my swing.
Simple in theory. Not so simple in practice.
But here’s where the mental game showed up:
I wasn’t trying to fix it mid-swing.
I wasn’t standing over the ball thinking mechanics.
Because that’s where everything falls apart.
The changes happen after the swing. During practice. Between rounds.
Not when you’re over the ball.
The “I’m Actually a Golfer” Moment
Then came another moment.
I played my first full 18-hole course.
Par 4s. Par 5s. The real thing.
Up until then, it had all been Par 3s.
And wow… what a difference.
Standing on a long Par 5…
having to think through the hole…
actually playing it out instead of just “hit and reset”…
It hit me:
This is what golf is supposed to feel like.
And something else happened too –
Because my mindset was better…
because I wasn’t overthinking every swing…
I started hitting shots.
Real shots.
The kind where the people you’re playing with – who’ve been doing this for years – look at you a little differently.
That was new.
That was improvement.
That was the mental game starting to turn the tide.
When It Carries Over
A week later, I went to the range.
Same swing. Same body.
Different mindset.
And it turned into the best range session I’ve ever had.
Normally? Maybe 10 out of 60 balls go where I want.
This time?
Let’s just say… most of them did.
(And yes, maybe there’s a little “fishing story” inflation in there… but not much.)
What really stood out:
• Balls were going the right direction
• Distances were more consistent
• I was seeing 20+ extra yards per club
That’s not luck.
That’s what happens when effort + awareness + mindset start lining up.
The Real Point
This wasn’t about having a perfect swing.
It was about something finally clicking mentally.
• Understanding what to work on
• Knowing when to work on it
• Letting go when it’s time to swing
That’s the difference.
That’s the game inside the game.
If You’re In That Grind…
If you’re in that phase where nothing feels consistent…
Stick with it.
Because when it starts to turn – even just a little – it fuels everything.
And when it fuels everything…
That’s when improvement actually happens.
Drop your moments in the comments or over in The Clubhouse –
those “wait… was that me?” shots.
Because those are the ones that keep you coming back.
The Next Shot
Your next shot doesn’t have to be perfect – just intentional.
Loosen up. Then let the club do the work.
Real Talk. Play Better.
Effort builds results.
