The Two Fundamentals That Finally Made My Swing Consistent
Settle in. Let’s talk golf.
I was chasing swing thoughts when I should’ve been mastering fundamentals.
For months, I tried everything.
Grip tweaks.
Takeaway changes.
“Shallow it.”
“Rotate more.”
My brain was overloaded.
Then I simplified.
Two fundamentals.
That was it.
• Hinge & re-hinge
• 3:1 tempo
Everything else became secondary.
Fundamental #1: Hinge and Re-Hinge
For a long time, I swung with stiff wrists.
It felt strong.
It wasn’t efficient.
When I learned to let my wrists hinge naturally going back – and re-hinge after impact – the club finally worked the way it was designed to.
Immediately, I noticed:
• Cleaner contact
• Higher launch
• More compression
• Less “slap” at impact
The swing stopped looking forced.
I wasn’t steering the club anymore.
I was letting it release.
Fundamental #2: 3:1 Tempo
You’ve heard it before.
Three parts back.
One part through.
But tempo isn’t just rhythm.
It creates structure.
When I slowed my backswing:
• I stopped rushing transition
• I gave my wrists time to hinge
• I stopped throwing my arms at the ball
Tempo created space.
Why These Two Work Together
Here’s what finally clicked:
Tempo gives you time.
Hinge gives you speed.
If you rush:
You can’t hinge properly.
If you don’t hinge:
You have nothing to release.
But when you:
Take it back with rhythm (3)
Allow natural hinge
Swing through with intent (1)
Re-hinge into a full finish
The swing feels athletic.
Not violent.
Not forced.
Just sequenced.
The First Time It Clicked
The first time both fundamentals synced up?
It felt effortless.
The ball started on line.
Carried farther.
And I finished balanced instead of hunched.
That’s when I knew:
I wasn’t swinging harder before.
I was swinging out of order.
If You Only Focus on Two Things
Forget 15 swing thoughts.
Start here:
Count “Slow… Calm…” going back.
Allow natural hinge.
Swing through and re-hinge high.
That’s it.
Build from there.
Final Thought
Golf improvement doesn’t usually come from more effort.
It comes from:
Better rhythm.
Better release.
Better sequencing.
Two fundamentals.
Massive difference.
If you had to simplify your swing down to just two fundamentals, what would they be?
Drop them in the comments – I love seeing what clicks for different players.
Real Talk. Play Better.
Effort builds results.
