Settle in. Let’s talk golf

If you’ve ever nodded along on the golf course while thinking “I have no idea what that means” you’re not alone.

Golf has its own language.

The good news? You don’t need to know all of it.
You just need enough to feel comfortable, keep pace, and not feel awkward.

These are the 25 golf terms I wish I knew when I started – explained in plain English.

1. Par
The number of strokes a hole is supposed to take.

2. Birdie
One stroke under par.

3. Bogey
One stroke over par.

4. Double Bogey
Two strokes over par. Happens. Often.

5. Tee Box
Where you start each hole.

6. Fairway
The short grass you’re trying to hit.

7. Rough
The longer grass you usually end up in.

8. Green
The smooth area around the hole where you putt.

9. Fringe
The slightly longer grass just off the green.

10. Putt
A stroke taken on the green.

11. Drive
Your first shot, usually with a driver.

12. Slice
A shot that curves hard to the right (for right-handed golfers).

13. Hook
A shot that curves hard to the left (for right-handed golfers).

14. Mulligan
An unofficial do-over.
Friendly rounds only 😉

15. Handicap
A number that represents your skill level. Higher = newer golfer.

16. Scramble
A team format where everyone hits, then you pick the best shot.

17. Stroke Play
Everyone plays their own ball and counts all strokes.

18. Match Play
You compete hole-by-hole instead of total score.

19. Hazard
Water, bunkers, or anything designed to ruin your day.

20. Bunker
A sand trap.

21. Lie
How the ball is sitting on the ground.

22. Pitch
A short shot, usually inside 50 yards.

23. Chip
A low, short shot near the green.

24. Gimme
A putt close enough that everyone agrees you’d make it.

25. Fore!
A warning yelled when a ball is heading toward someone.

The Goal Isn’t Mastery – It’s Comfort

You don’t need to sound like a pro.
You just need to understand what’s happening.

Once I learned these terms, golf instantly became more fun and way less intimidating.

Be honest, which term did you pretend to understand at first?
No judgment here.
Drop it in the comments. We’ve all nodded confidently while being completely confused
